15 Years with Yarl IT Hub: Growing a Community, Building Ecosteem

In 2011, Northern Sri Lanka stood at a historic crossroads. As the region began to rebuild, I reflected on how to contribute meaningfully to its long-term prosperity. I realized that energy is the fundamental engine of development—and with an abundance of sunlight across our region, harvesting solar power was the obvious answer. This gave birth to my founding vision: "Empower Energy Freedom."

At the time, however, I had no clear roadmap for where to begin. That changed when Yaalini Balathasan introduced me to Balathasan Sayanthan. Our initial conversation lasted over two hours, during which he shared his inspiring vision to transform Jaffna into the next Silicon Valley. He had co-founded Yarl IT Hub alongside a small group of dreamers who shared a simple yet radical belief: technology and entrepreneurship could transform our region from the roots up.

I joined Yarl IT Hub as a member from day one. In that exact same period, fueled by the same spirit of grassroots transformation, I laid the foundation for Ecosteem—bringing sustainable solar solutions and true energy freedom to our people.

Looking back across these 15 years, I realize that my journey with Yarl IT Hub and my journey as an entrepreneur have never been separate paths. They are two strands of the exact same DNA: a deep commitment to grassroots innovation, resilience, and building a self-sustaining future for our community.

Wearing Every Hat

Over the past decade and a half, I have had the privilege of engaging with Yarl IT Hub in nearly every role imaginable. In the early days, it was pure, unglamorous execution—setting up tables, managing logistics, arranging projectors, and ensuring that school children and university students who walked through our doors felt welcomed and heard.

As the community grew, so did our ambitions. The launch of the Yarl Geek Challenge (YGC) became our flagship movement. I moved from handling event logistics to serving as a volunteer, mentor, and track organizer. Watching nervous teenagers at the Yarl Geek Junior Challenge present open-source hardware projects, or watching university teams refine their business models during late-night hackathons, recharged my own entrepreneurial spirit every single year.

To participate in every event for 15 years is to witness a quiet revolution. You watch a high school student who once struggled to articulate a basic software idea grow into a confident startup founder. You see young women breaking cultural barriers through initiatives like Uki and Cuter, commanding respect on pitch stages. Yarl IT Hub was never just a tech organization; it became an incubator for human confidence and a thriving ecosystem for entrepreneurs.

The Symbiosis: How Yarl IT Hub Built Ecosteem

Running a startup in an emerging region comes with immense hurdles—supply chain disruptions, market skepticism, and economic volatility. Whenever I faced challenges while building Ecosteem into a trusted renewable energy provider, the ethos of Yarl IT Hub served as my anchor.

• Grassroots Problem-Solving: Yarl IT Hub taught us never to wait for top-down solutions. If there was a skill gap, the community created Uki. If young founders lacked guidance, we launched accelerators. I brought this exact mindset to Ecosteem. When off-grid solar and microgrid technology were still nascent in Sri Lanka, we didn't wait for ideal conditions—we engineered custom solutions tailored to local farmers, homeowners, and commercial setups.

Ecosteem was built on that exact foundation. Our goal was never merely selling solar panels; it was empowering people to achieve energy independence while protecting the environment.
  
  
• The Mentorship Engine: At Yarl IT Hub, knowledge flows freely—veteran engineers advise college novices, and young coders teach senior leaders about emerging tech trends. That open, continuous-learning culture became the backbone of how I train and lead our team at Ecosteem.
  
  

15 Years of Milestones

If you look at Northern Sri Lanka today compared to 2011, the transformation is tangible. Tech culture has become part of the local vocabulary. Parents who once insisted strictly on traditional career paths now proudly cheer for their children pitching AI and hardware startups at the YGC Innovation Festivals.

Being part of that evolution—feeling the electric energy in a room full of young innovators pitching solutions to real-world problems—remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Every hackathon overnight session, every strategic community meeting, and every mentor feedback loop reinforced the belief that local talent, given the right ecosystem, can compete globally.

Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter

Fifteen years is a significant milestone, but in the life of a community movement, it is merely the foundation.

As I look to the future, the crossover between technology and sustainability will define our next decade. Renewable energy, smart grids, electric mobility, and AI-driven efficiency are no longer distant concepts—they are the essential tools with which we will build a resilient economy.

My commitment to Yarl IT Hub remains as steadfast today as it was in 2011. Whether as a mentor, volunteer, or fellow builder, I will always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with this community. What fills me with the greatest pride, however, is seeing the next generation step forward from my own home. Watching my son join the community as a volunteer gives me a profound sense of fulfillment—knowing that this journey, and the vision behind it, is being passed seamlessly from father to son.
